About the Artwork

Pichhwai is a traditional Indian painting tradition associated with Shri Nathji, a form of Lord Krishna, and has strong roots in the devotional art of Rajasthan. Traditionally, Pichhwai paintings were made on cloth and used as decorative backdrops behind the shrine of Shri Nathji.

This artwork brings the Pichhwai style onto paper using acrylic colours. Shri Nathji occupies the centre of the composition, with lotus flowers, jewellery, a flute and detailed decorative patterns surrounding the figure.

The painting has been drawn and painted by hand. The fine lines and individual colour details give the artwork the character of a handmade original.

It can be displayed in a devotional space, living room, bedroom, study or as part of a personal art collection.

A note on the subject: this painting depicts Shri Nathji in the Pichhwai tradition. The religious or devotional significance of the subject may vary from viewer to viewer, and the artwork is offered here as an original handmade painting.

Art Style & Technique

Pichhwai is a traditional Indian painting style with roots in the devotional art of Rajasthan. Historically, large Pichhwai paintings were created on cloth and hung behind the idol of Shri Nathji in temples.

This artwork adapts that traditional style to paper, using acrylic colours instead of the natural pigments used in some older forms of Indian painting.

The composition centres on Shri Nathji and combines the figure with floral details and an intricately patterned background. The painting has been created by hand, with the decorative details drawn and coloured individually.

Because the artwork is handmade, small differences in line work and colour application are natural. These details are part of what makes an original painting different from a printed reproduction.

The Composition in Detail

Shri Nathji forms the central focus of the painting. The figure is surrounded by lotus flowers, jewellery details, a flute and layers of decorative patterns.

The green-toned background adds another layer of detail to the composition, with patterns extending behind the main figure and floral elements.

The use of blue, green, yellow, orange, red and pink gives the painting a rich and colourful appearance while the dark outlines help define the individual motifs.
